The Challenge

  • The water in a small (i.e. capillary) gap between immersion lens and screen is the source of a force pulling both objects together.
  • This force has dynamic components and therefore is challenging if the size of the drop is controlled via a feedback loop.

The Approach

  • Physical analysis of the process using surface tension, contact angles and energy differences
  • Modelling of the shape of the meniscus
  • Implementing of Hagen-Poiseuille flow and a relaxation effect for the dynamic part

Result & Added Value

  • Successful derivation of the physical theories
  • Successful implementation of dynamic effects
  • Generalized model was implemented in MATLAB, which allows prediction of the time-dependent forces acting at a particular volume flow
